Weather Update 01.14.22

Summary:
A fast-moving winter storm will bring heavy, accumulating snow which may combine with gusty winds to produce hazardous travel across parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest into the Mid-Mississippi Valley through Saturday morning.  This storm will spread wintry precipitation from the Southeast into the Northeast U.S. this weekend and into early next week.
 
Potential travel lanes of concern:
  • I-29 from Grand Forks, ND to Kansas City, MO
  • I-20 from Florence, SC to Atlanta, GA
  • I-35 from Des Moines, IA to Kansas City, MO
  • I-80 from Iowa City, IA to Omaha, NE
  • I-94 from Bismarck to Fargo, ND
  • I-95 from Florence, SC  to the Maine-Canada border. This storm is expected to impact, to varying degrees, most of the I-95 corridor from the Southeast to New England.
  • I-77 in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia
  • I-40 from Memphis, TN to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina
  • I-65 from Huntsville, AL to Nashville, TN
  • Entire I-81 corridor
  • I-85 from Petersburg, VA to Atlanta, GA
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory
Southeastern Montana is under a winter weather advisory until 5pmMST today.
  • Areas of light snow and blowing snow expected; 1-2 inches snow accumulation
  • Patchy freezing drizzle
  • Wind gusts 35-45mph
  • I-90 will be impacted
 
Wyoming
Winter Weather Advisory
Northeastern Wyoming is under a winter weather advisory until 5pmMST today.
  • Areas of light snow and blowing snow expected; 1-2 inches snow accumulation
  • Patchy freezing drizzle
  • Wind gust 35-45 mph
 
North Dakota
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
A winter storm warning is in effect for most of North Dakota.  This is in place until 6pmCST today.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • Up to 3 inches additional snowfall accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 35mph
  • Roads will become snow covered and travel will become difficult.  
 
 
South Dakota
Winter Storm Warning
Most of South Dakota is under a winter storm warning until midnight tonight.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • 3-6 inches of additional snow accumulation
  • Hazardous road conditions are expected.  
 
Nebraska
Winter Weather Advisory
Eastern Nebraska is under a winter weather advisory until 6amCST on Saturday.
  • 1-4 inches expected
  • Light freezing rain or sleet possible this morning.
  • Winds gusting 40mph
 
Kansas
Winter Weather Advisory / High Wind Warning
Central and Eastern Kansas is under a winter weather advisory from 6pm this evening to noon on Saturday.   Mixed precipitation is expected.  Southwestern Kansas is under a high wind warning starting today at noon until 5amMST on Saturday.
  • 1-2 inches of snow accumulation
  • Light glace of ice
  • Roads are expected to be slippery
  • Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
 
Colorado 
High Wind Warning
Southeastern Colorado is under a high wind warning from 11am this morning until 7pmMST tonight.
  • Winds 30-40 mph with gusts up to 60mph expected
  • Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
 
Texas
High Wind Warning 
Northern Texas is under a high wind warning from 10am this morning to 6amCST on Saturday.
  • North winds 35 - 45 mph with gust up to 65mph 
  • Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
 
Oklahoma
High Wind Warning
The panhandle of Western Oklahoma is under a high wind warning from 10am this morning to 6amCST on Saturday.
  • North winds 35 - 45 mph with gust up to 65mph 
  • Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
 
Arkansas
Winter Storm Watch
Northern Arkansas is under a winter storm watch from Saturday morning through late Saturday night.
  • 1-4 inches of snow with localized higher amounts
 
Missouri
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Missouri from 3am to 9pmCST on Saturday.
  • 1-4 inches of snow
  • Winds gusting 35mph
 
Iowa
Winter Storm Warning
This winter storm warning is in effect for all of today and into early Saturday morning.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • 6-10 inches snow accumulation; locally higher amounts possible
 
Minnesota
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Central and Southern Minnesota are under a winter storm warning with other parts under a winter weather advisory.
  • Winter storm warning:  6-10 inches snow accumulation
  • Winter Weather advisory:  3-5 inches snow accumulation
 
Wisconsin
Winter Weather Advisory
Southwestern Wisconsin is under a winter weather advisory until 3amCST on Saturday.
  • 3-5 inches additional snow accumulation
  • Freezing drizzle this morning.
  • Slick conditions on roadways expected.
 
Illinois
Winter Weather Advisory
South Central and Southwest Illinois is under a winter weather advisory from 6pm this evening until noon CST on Saturday.
  • 4-6 inches snow accumulation
  • Hazardous road conditions will be possible by this evenings commute
 
Tennessee
Winter Storm Watch
Most of Western and Middle Tennessee are under a winter storm watch effective Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon.  Heavy wet snow is possible.
  • 3-7 inches possible
 
Kentucky
Winter Storm Watch
Northeast and Southeast Kentucky has a winter storm watch effective late Saturday night through Late Sunday night.  Heavy wet snow is possible mixed with rain and freezing rain possible.
  • 5-9 inches of snow accumulations
  • Light glaze of ice possible
 
Georgia
Winter Storm Watch
North Central and Northeast Georgia are under a winter storm watch from Saturday evening through late Sunday night.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.  
  • 2-5 inches of snow accumulation
  • Ice accumulation up to two tenths of an inches possible
  • Wind dust as high as 35mph
 
South Carolina
Winter Storm Watch
Northwest South Carolina has a winter storm watch effective from Saturday evening into Monday morning.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.
  • 2-5 inches of sleet, snow and ice expected
 
North Carolina
Winter Storm Watch
Western and Central North Carolina are under a winter storm watch from late Saturday night through Sunday night.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.
  • 2-4 inches of snow
  • One tenth to three tenth of an inch of ice possible
 
Virginia
Winter Storm Watch
Southwest and central Virginia are under a winter storm watch from Sunday morning through Monday morning.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.
  • 5-10 inches across the mountains; heavy snowfall possible in other areas
  • Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch
 
West Virginia
Winter Storm Watch
A winter storm watch is in effect for all of West Virginia from Sunday morning through Monday morning.  Heavy snow is possible.  Snow may change over to freezing rain Sunday afternoon then back to snow.  
  • 4-7 inches; higher elevations up to 10 inches
 
Ohio
Winter Storm Watch
East Central & Southeastern Ohio is under a winter storm watch from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon.  Heavy snow is possible.
  • 4-9 inches of snow possible
 
 
Pennsylvania
Winter Storm Watch  / Wind Chill Advisory
Pennsylvania is under a winter storm watch from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon.   Portions of Central and Northern PA are also under a wind chill advisory from midnight tonight to noon on Saturday.  
  • 4-9 inches of snow possible
  • Wind chill advisory:  -20
 
New York
Winter Storm Watch / Wind Chill Warning
New York pairs a wind chill warning for tonight into Saturday with a winter storm watch from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon.
  • Wind chill warning:  -30
  • Storm watch:  up to 7 inches or more is possible
