Weather Update 01.12.22 - U.S.

Summary:  Heavy rain will bring flooding and landslide risks in Washington across the Olympic Peninsula and Northern Cascades into Thursday. Light snow and freezing rain is expected east of the Cascades into Montana through Wednesday morning. Gusty winds may cause hazardous travel in Montana and Wyoming throughout the day.

As a heads up, there is a storm that is forming. A Canadian storm system is expected to bring accumulating snowfall to the Northern Plains Thursday night into Friday. Looking ahead to Thursday night, a strengthening surface low emerging out of the Canadian Prairies is expected to dive south into the North Central U.S. Thursday night into Friday. The next storm system is primed to produce heavy snow and will result in treacherous travel conditions across parts of the Northern Plains and Midwest to close out the work-week.
 
Washington
Flood Warning / Flood Watch
Northwest Washington is under a flood warning. Heavy rain is expected over the slopes of the Olympics.  Rain totals for this event Tuesday and Wednesday could end as high as 10 inches.  A flood watch is in effect to include Seattle, Everett and Bellingham.   Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Tuesday rainfall totals:  5-7 inches in the Olympics; 3-4 inches along the coast; 2-4 inches in the Northern & Central Cascades; Another 1-1.5 inches is forecast today.
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory
Western and Central Montana is under a winter weather advisory until 10amMST.  Mixed precipitation is expected.

Central and north central Idaho are under a winter weather advisory until 10amMST.  Mixed precipitation is expected.
