Weather Update 01.07.22 - U.S.

Summary: 
One final storm system will move across the Northwest Friday with heavy coastal rain and heavy mountain snow before the region gets a break through the weekend following a stretch of impactful weather. A winter storm will bring moderate to heavy snow from the Appalachians to the Northeast U.S. through Friday. Bands of heavy lake effect snow will continue downwind of each Great Lake through Friday.
 
Highlights:
  • A quick hitting Nor'easter will bring disruptive snowfall to parts of the Northeast and New England today.
  • Heavy mountain snow and gusty winds to impact the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies today.
  • Dangerously cold temperatures are in place throughout the Northern Plains and Midwest this morning.  They will get a break on Saturday, but Sunday brings another surge of Artic Air.
 
Washington
Winter Storm Warning
This is still in place for mountainous areas in Washington.  Keep in mind that significant snowfall has been occurring for upwards of a week.  While snow is not falling in some areas, roads are still snow covered and travel is still slow.   Oak Harbor, a west coast based carrier, advised that due to extreme weather nearly all major roads connecting West Washington and West Oregon to East Washington and Idaho are closed with no current ETA of re-opening.  Areas named in Washington include:  Auburn, Burlington, Woodinville, Olympia and Bremerton.  Other carriers will be experiencing the same issues.
  • Heavy snow to continue above 1500 feet.
  • Additional snow accumulations of up to 12 inches
  • Winds gusting as high as 40mph 
 
Oregon
Winter Storm Warning
The winter storm warning is still persisting in mountainous areas of Oregon as well.  Keep in mind they have also received significant snowfall for upwards of a week.  The Northern Oregon Cascades are still expected to see additional significant snow fall.   Oak Harbor, a west coast based carrier, advised that due to extreme weather nearly all major roads connecting West Washington and West Oregon to East Washington and Idaho are closed with no current ETA of re-opening. Areas named in Oregon include:  Portland, Salem, Eugene, Medford and Coos Bay.  Other carriers will be experiencing the same issues.
  • Heavy snow expected above 3000 feet
  • Additional snow accumulations of 8-15 inches
  • Winds gusting as high as 60mph
 
California
Winter Weather Advisory
The northern Sierra Nevada mountains are still in for more snow and are under a winter weather advisory.  Roads in the area are snow covered and slippery.  Reports are that chain controls will likely be enforced for trucks traveling over the Sierra Nevada mountains.  
  • Additional snow accumulations of 2-6 inches
  • Localized amounts up to 8 inches over higher peaks
 
Idaho
Winter Storm Warning
Central and northern Idaho remain under a winter storm warning.  The snow will be tapering off but, when doing so, is expected to change to heavy mixed precipitation making roadways difficult to travel due to the amount of snowfall already in place with ice glazing possible.   Oak Harbor, a west coast based carrier, advised that due to extreme weather nearly all major roads connecting West Washington and West Oregon to East Washington and Idaho are closed with no current ETA of re-opening.  Areas named in Idaho include:  Meridian, Boise, Twin Falls and Pocatello.  Other carriers will be experiencing the same issue. 
  • Additional snow accumulations of 2-4 inches
  • Ice accumulations of a light glaze
 
Montana
Winter Storm Warning / Blizzard Warning / High Wind Warning
The winter storm warning is still in place for West Central Montana and Western Montana impacting the Northern Rockies.  Blowing & drifting snow, gusty winds, and dropping temperatures are to occur throughout today.  
  • Winter Storm Warning - western / west central Montana -- heavy mixed precipitation to include an additional snowfall of 5-10 inches with ice accumulations of a light glaze.  Travel is expected to become difficult to impossible in these area.
  • Blizzard Warning - Parts of western Montana located above 7000 feet to include Marias Pass -- Additional snow accumulations up to 12 inches above 7000 feet with 3 to 6 inches near Marias Pass and less than 2 inches on the Plains.   Winds gusting as high as 80mph.
 
Wyoming
Winter Weather Advisory / High Wind Warning
Western Wyoming has a winter weather advisory in effect.  Heavy, blowing snow is expected.
  • Additional snow accumulations of 5-10 inches
  • Winds gusting up to 75mph
  • Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles across Wyoming today.  
 
Michigan
Winter Storm Warning
Western Michigan along the lake remains under a winter storm warning.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • Additional snow accumulations of 1-6 inches
 
Ohio
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in effect from Cleveland east along the lake (generally including the snowbelt area). Lake effect snow is expected.
  • 2-5 inches accumulation
 
Pennsylvania
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in effect for areas bordering Ohio including Erie, PA and surrounding areas.  Lake effect snow is expected.  
  • 3-5 inches accumulation
 
New York
Winter Weather Advisory
Buffalo, Jamestown and areas surrounding Syracuse are expecting Lake effect snow.  
  • 5-9 inches accumulation
 
Massachusetts
Winter Storm Warning
Heavy snow is expected throughout today for southeastern Massachusetts.
  • 5-8 inches accumulation
 
Delaware
Winter Storm Warning
Heavy snow is expected throughout today for southern RI.
  • 5-8 inches accumulation
 
New Hampshire
Winter Storm Warning
Heavy snow is expected until 10pm tonight.
  • 4-7 inches accumulation
 
Maine
Winter Storm Warning
Coastal Maine is set to have heavy snow move in throughout today ending around 10pm this evening.  Inland Maine has a winter weather advisory in effect.  Both areas are expecting heavy snowfall and gusting winds.
  • 5-7 inches accumulation
  • Winds gusting to 30mph
