Weather Update 01.06.22 - U.S.

Summary:  Mountain snow continues from Northwest U.S. into the Central Rockies through Friday. A winter storm will bring heavy snow and some areas of ice from the Mid-South into the Northeast U.S. Thursday into Friday. Several inches of snow and any ice could result in widespread hazardous travel. Heavy lake effect snow will also continue today in Michigan.
 
Washington
Winter Storm Warning
Moderate to heavy snowfall is impacting most of Washington today.  The storm warning is set to expire at 10AamPST today.
  • Snowfall rates around Wenatchee, Chelan, Omak and into the East Slopes of the Cascades have been very heavy and on the order of 1-2 inches per hour.  Cascade passes are closed.
  • 1-3 inches additional snow accumulation today
  • Storm total accumulations expected 4-8 inches
 
Oregon
Winter Storm Warning
Northeast Oregon has a winter storm warning until 12pmPST today.  Heavy wet snow is falling.
  • 1 -2 inches additional snow accumulation today
  • Wind gusts up to 35mph
 
Idaho
Winter Storm Warning
Central and north Idaho, including all of the northern Rockies, is under a winter storm warning now through Saturday.  
  • Heaviest snow expected in Central Idaho (elevations above 4500 feet) - 12" - 36" of snow
  • North central Idaho valley accumulations - 2 -6 inches with locally higher amounts
  • Travel will be difficult to impossible in some areas of the storm warning.
 
Montana
Winter Storm Warning / Blizzard Warning / Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
Conditions in Montana will deteriorate through Saturday.
  • West Central Montana is expecting heavy snowfall (elevations above 4500 feet) - 12" - 36" of snow
  • West Montana Valley accumulations (below 4500 feet) - 6 - 10 inches
  • The Rocky Mountain Front will experience blizzard conditions from midnight tonight through midnight Friday night.  Whiteout  conditions are expected.  Travel will be dangerous and could be potentially life-threatening.  Dangerously cold wind chills of -30 below.
  • Central and eastern Montana is under a winter weather advisory from now through 8pm Thursday.  Additional snow accumulations of 6 - 14 inches with winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
 
Wyoming
Winter Storm Warning
Western Wyoming is under a storm warning until 11pmMST tonight.
  • Additional snow accumulation of 10-18 inches.
  • Winds gusting as high as 55mph
 
North Dakota
Wind Chill Warning
  • Remains in effect until noon Friday
  • Wind chills as low as -50
 
South Dakota
Wind Chill Warning
  • Remains in effect until 11amMST today
  • Wind chills as low as -35
 
Colorado
Winter Storm Warning
Areas west of Denver in the higher elevations are under a winter storm warning until noon today.
  • Total snowfall accumulation of 12 - 36 inches
  • Winds gusting as high as 60mph
 
Nebraska
Wind Chill Warning
Wind chill warning remains in effect until noon today.
  • Wind chills as low as -35 
 
Minnesota
Wind Chill Advisory
Wind chill advisory remains in effect until noon on Friday.
  • Wind chill as low as -55
 
Iowa

Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until noon today.
  • Wind chills as low as -30

Wind Chill Advisory
Wind Chill Advisory in effect through 9am Friday.
  • Wind chills as low as -25
 
Michigan
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Southwest and west central Michigan are under a winter storm warning until 10am on Friday.  Areas on the western edge of the lake will mostly be impacted.  
  • 4-12 inches accumulation with locally over 12 inches possible
  • 1-4 inches accumulation in winter weather advisory area just off the edge of the winter storm warning area
  • Snowfall rates could exceed a half an inch per hour early afternoon into tonight.

Wind chill warning remains in effect until noon today.
  • Wind chills as low as -55
 
Oklahoma
Wind Chill Advisory
Wind chill advisory remains in effect until 10am today.
  • Wind chills as low as -10
 
Texas

Wind chill advisory remains in effect for northern Texas today until 11am.
  • Wind chills as low as -10
 
Missouri
Winter Weather Advisory
Portions of central, southwest and west central Missouri are under a winter weather advisory until 10a this morning.
  • Total snow accumulation of 1-3 inches of snow
 
Arkansas
Winter Storm Warning
Eastern Arkansas is under a winter storm warning.  Mixed precipitation along and south of I-40 with light accumulations of ice/sleet/snow.  Snow accumulations will occur north of I-40.  This is expected to be in place until 6pmCST tonight.
  • up to one inch of snow
  • up to 1/10th of an inch of ice accumulation
 
Mississippi
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Mississippi is under a winter weather advisory until 6pm MST today.  Mixed precipitation is expected.
  • up to one inch of snow
  • up to 1/10th of an inch of ice accumulation
 
Alabama
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6pmCST tonight.  Mixed wintry precipitation expected.  
  • up to one inch of snow with locally higher amounts
  • up to 1/10th of an inch of ice accumulation
 
Georgia
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Georgia is under a winter weather advisory through 11pm tonight.  Periods of wintry mix of snow and sleet with a slight chance of freezing rain expected across far north Georgia.
  • Total snow accumulations up to one inch.
 
Tennessee
Winter Storm Warning
Tennessee is under a winter storm warning until 8pmCST tonight.  Heavy snow is expected.  
  • 3-5 inches of accumulation
 
Kentucky
Winter Storm Warning
Kentucky is under a winter storm warning until 9pmCST.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • 4-6 inches of accumulation
 
North Carolina
Winter Storm warning
Western North Carolina is under a winter storm warning.  Heavy mixed precipitation is expected through 7am on Friday.
  • 2-4 inches accumulation; Areas above 5000 feet up to 5 inches
  • Light glaze of ice possible
  • Winds gusting as high as 35mph
 
West Virginia
Winter Storm Warning
The state of West Virginia is under a winter storm warning from noon today to 8am Friday.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • 4-8 inches accumulation 
 
Ohio
Winter Storm Warning
Southeastern Ohio is under a winter storm warning until 8am on Friday.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • 3-5 inches accumulation
 
Virginia 
Winter Weather Advisory
Southwest and west central Virginia are under a winter weather advisory until 7amEST Friday.
  • up to 4 inches accumulation with locally higher amounts at higher elevations
 
Pennsylvania
Winter Weather Advisory
Central and eastern PA are under a winter weather advisory starting at 7pm tonight through 6am Friday.  Snow is expected to accumulate late this evening and will end before sunrise.
  • up to 3 inches accumulation
 
Maryland
Winter Weather Advisory
Northeast Maryland is under a winter weather advisory from 9pm tonight until 5am Friday.
  • 1-3 inches accumulation; isolated area of around 5 inches

Central and southwestern New Jersey are under a winter weather advisory from 10pm tonight through 10am on Friday.
  • 3-5 inches accumulation
