Weather Update 01.05.22 - U.S.

Summary:  Heavy mountain snow continues over the Northwest U.S. into the northern Rockies through Friday. Blizzard conditions will be in place tonight across the northern Plains with widespread snow and gusty winds expected across the Great Lakes on Wednesday. A winter storm is possible Thursday from the Tennessee Valley into the Northeast.
 
 
Washington
Winter Storm Warning
More heavy snow is expected through Thursday.
  • 12-28 inches of additional snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 40mph
 
Oregon
Winter Storm Warning
More heavy snow is expected through Thursday.
  • 4-9 inches of additional snow accumulation
  • Light ice accumulations possible tonight into early Thursday morning
 
Montana
Winter Storm Warning
Additional snowfall expected from today through Saturday.
  • 1-4 inches possible starting today; 14-28 total snow accumulation possible through Saturday
  • Wind chill as low as -15
  • I-90 travel is expected to be impacted.  Travel could be difficult to impossible with heave snowfall, blowing and drifting snow.
 
Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
Additional snowfall expected starting today at 1pm through noon on Thursday
  • 4-8 inches additional accumulation (winter storm warning area, mostly mountainous areas)
  • 2-4 additional accumulation 
  • Light ice accumulations possible
 
Utah
Winter Storm Warning
More heavy snow expected until 5pmMST today.
  • 12-24 inches additional snow accumulation in mountainous area
  • 3-6 inches additional accumulation in lower elevations
  • I-80 will likely be impacted with snow cover and possible blowing snow causing reduced visibility
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory & Wind Chill Advisory
An extended period of bitter cold with periods of snow and dangerously low wind chills expected through Friday.
  • Light snow expected today.  Heavier snowfall possible Thursday & Thursday night
  • High temperatures 5-15 below zero with lows -15 to -30; Wind chills -20 to -40 below.
 
Wyoming
Winter Storm Warning
Heavy snow possible until 11pm Thursday.
  • 15-25 inches snowfall with isolated higher totals up to 35 inches
  • Travel over passes and on highways may be very difficult to impossible.  Widespread blowing snow is expected to reduce visibility up to one tenth of a mile at times.  
 
Colorado
Winter Storm Warning
Areas west of Denver are under a winter storm warning until noon on Thursday.
  • 8-16 inches of snow accumulation with other areas at higher elevations receiving up to 36 inches of snow
  • Winds gusting up to 55mph
 
Nebraska
Winter Storm Warning & Wind Chill Warning
Western Nebraska is under a winter storm warning today through Thursday.  Heavy snow expected.
  • 3-5 inches of snow accumulation
  • Winds chills as low as -35
 
North Dakota
Blizzard Warning & Wind Chill Warning
Central & Eastern North Dakota will be under a blizzard warning through this morning.  The wind chill warning will be in place until noon on Thursday.
  • 1/2 inch of additional snow accumulation
  • Wind chills as low as -50
  • Blowing, drifting and dangerously cold conditions persist.
 
South Dakota
Wind Chill Warning
A wind chill warning remains in effect until noon today and then returns this evening through 11am on Thursday.
  • Wind chills as low as -40
 
Kansas
Winter Weather Advisory & Wind Chill Advisory
Northern Kansas is under a winter weather advisory from 6pm tonight until Thursday morning.  The entire state, except southeastern Kansas is under a wind chill advisory.
  • 2-4 inches snow accumulation
  • Wind chills from -20 to 29 
 
Oklahoma
Wind Chill Advisory
Central and western Oklahoma is under a wind chill advisory today through 10am Thursday.
  • Wind chills -5 to -12
 
Texas
Wind Chill Advisory
Parts of northern Texas are under a wind chill advisory today through noon on Thursday.
  • Wind chills -5 to -15
 
Missouri
Wind Chill Advisory
Northern Missouri is under a wind chill advisory from midnight tonight to noon on Thursday.
  • Wind chills up to -15 
 
Iowa
Winter Weather Advisory & Wind Chill Advisory
The winter weather advisory is in effect until noon today while the wind chill advisory is from midnight tonight to noon on Thursday.  
  • Light additional snow accumulation possible; Blowing snow likely.  
  • Winds gusting up to 45mph
  • Wind chills up to -25 
 
Minnesota
Winter Weather Advisory
Additional snowfall expected until 6pm this evening. 
  • 2-4 inches of snow accumulation
 
Wisconsin
Winter Weather Advisory
Additional snowfall expected until 6pm this evening.
  • 4-7 inches of snow accumulation by evening
  • Travel will be hazardous due to rate of snowfall, blowing & drifting snow
 
Illinois
Winter Weather Advisory & Wind Chill Advisory
Northern IL is under a winter weather advisory until 6pm this evening.  
  • Light snow showers, but snow is expected to blow causing reduced visibility
  • Wind gusts up to 45mph
  • Wind chills -10 to -20
 
Michigan
Winter Storm Warning & Winter Weather Advisory
The western border of MI along the lake is under a winter storm warning.  As you move east, MI is under a winter weather advisory.
  • Heavy lake effect snow is expected until 7am on Thursday.  4-10 inches likely with wind gusts as high as 45mph.  Snowfall coverage and intensity, as well as winds, will increase substantially as the day progresses.  Occasional whiteout conditions should be expected.  
  • In areas under the winter weather advisory (central MI), 1-4 inches of snow expected.  Winds gusting as high as 45mph.  
 
New York

Areas around Buffalo and around Gouverneur, NY are under a winter weather advisory.  Lake effect snow is expected.
  • 3-7 inches of snow accumulation
 
New Jersey
