Weather Update 01.04.22 - U.S.

Summary:  Icy patches will be especially problematic on untreated roadways into Tuesday morning from Tennessee into Maryland where heavy wet snow fell Monday.  Heavy coastal rain with possible flooding and widespread mountain snow will continue for the Northwest U.S. into the northern Rockies for much of this week.  High winds will impact the central and southern High Plains Tuesday.  
 
Highlights
  • Heavy snow for Cascades, Northern/Central Rockies and Intermountain West thought Wednesday
  • Deepening winter storm to produce heavy snowfall over parts of The Upper Midwest/Great Lakes beginning today.  
  • Cold air pours down into the Great Plains through mid-week.
  • Potentially disruptive winter weather to impact parts of Tennessee Valley on Thursday.  
 
Washington
Winter Weather Advisory
This in place through Wednesday for much of Washington.  Snow will continue.
  • 6-15 inches additional accumulation
  • Total snow accumulations possible of 15-30 inches possible in areas.
  • Travel is expected to become difficult and pass closures are possible.
 
 
Oregon
Winter Storm Warning
Southwest Oregon is under a winter storm warning until 10pm this evening. Heavy snow and blowing/drifting snow continues.  
  • 8-16 inches additional accumulation
  • Wind gusts 45 - 65mph at times
  • Travel will be impacted on Highways 62, 138, 140 and 230
 
California
Winter Weather Advisory
North Central CA remains under a winter weather advisory through 1pm today.  This is mainly for the mountain regions.
  • 2-4 inches additional accumulation with localized amounts up to 6 inches
  • I-80 is snow covered and should expect travel delays.
 
Nevada
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Nevada is under a winter weather advisory until 4pm on Wednesday.  Widespread blowing and drifting snow is expected in this area.
  • 3-9 inches additional accumulation on mountain passes and summits
  • 1-3 inches additional accumulation in the valleys
 
Utah
Winter Weather Advisory
Northeast Utah is under a winter weather advisory (to include Salt Lake City).  This is in place until 5am Thursday.
  • 4-8 inches additional accumulation  
 
Idaho
Winter Storm Warning & Winter Weather Advisory
Southwestern Idaho is under a winter storm warning while southeastern Idaho is under a winter weather advisory.  
  • Areas in winter storm warning should expect 1-3 inches with blowing and drifting snow (near Nevada border)
  • Areas in winter weather advisory should expect 2 inches additional accumulation.
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory
Most of Montana is under a winter weather advisory until 11amMST today.  
  • 1-3 inches additional accumulation
  • Wind gust to 30mph creating drifting snow
 
Nebraska
High Wind Warning
Most of Nebraska is under a high wind warning from 9am today to 5pmMST.  Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles.  
 
Wyoming
High Wind Warning
Southeastern Wyoming is under a high wind warning from 9am today to 5pmMST.  Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles.  
 
South Dakota
High Wind Warning & Winter Weather Advisory
Western South Dakota is under a high wind warning from 9am today to 5pmMST.  Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles.   Eastern South Dakota is under a winter weather advisory.  Hazardous road conditions are expected to impact this area overnight and into Wednesday morning.  Cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero are also in place.
  • 2-4 inches snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting to 40mph
  • Wind chills as low as -20 possible
 
North Dakota
Winter Weather Advisory
Eastern North Dakota has a winter weather advisory from 10amCST today to 6amCST tomorrow.  Snow is expected with high winds and low wind chills.
  • 1-5 inches 
  • Winds gusting to 50mph
  • Wind chills as low as -35 possible
 
 
Minnesota
Winter Weather Advisory
Minnesota has a winter weather advisory in effect from 9pm tonight until 6pm CST Wednesday.  Snow and blowing snow expected along with low wind chills.
  • 2-4 inches 
  • Wind gusting to 40mph
  • Wind chills as low as -20 possible
 
Wisconsin
Winter Weather Advisory
Wisconsin has a winter weather advisory in effect from 9pm this evening until 6pm CST Wednesday.  Snow and blowing snow expected.
  • 3-5 inches 
  • Wind gusting to 40mph
 
Illinois
Winter Weather Advisory
North central & northeast Illinois is under a winter weather advisory from 9pm this evening until 3pm CST Wednesday.  Blowing and drifting snow likely with severely reduced visibilities.
  • Snow already in place is expected to create hazardous conditions.  Pockets of whiteout conditions are expected to develop along north south roads.
  • Wind gusting to 45mph
  • Potential exists for near ground blizzard conditions late tonight into Wednesday
 
Michigan
Winter Storm Warning
Southwest & west central Michigan is under a winter storm warning from 4am Wednesday to 7amEST Thursday.  Localized heavy lake effect snow into Thursday.  
  • 4-9 inches 
  • Winds gusting to 50mph
  • Near blizzard conditions and occasional whiteouts may occur.
