Weather Update 01.03.22 - U.S.

Summary:  A quick hitting and fast moving winter storm will impact the Mid-Atlantic today with heavy, wet snow. Heavy snow is expected for parts of the central/southern Appalachians. The snow fall will lead to significant travel disruptions, dangerous driving conditions and scattered power outages. This week will be extremely wet and very inclement across the Northwest quadrant of the U.S. Heavy rain is possible with flooding and widespread mountain snow in the northwest.
 
 
Washington
Winter Storm Warning
Most of the state is expecting another round of moderate to heavy snow today.  Blowing and drifting snow is expected to occur causing travel delays.
  • 4-8 inches additional accumulation expected
  • Travel is expected to be delayed / slowed in much of Washington
 
Oregon
Winter Storm Warning
Most of the state is expecting another round of moderate to heavy snow today especially in higher elevations.  Gusty winds along with the heavy snow will create blowing and drifting.  Whiteout conditions are possible.
  • 6-12 inches in areas below 3500 foot elevations
  • 12-24 inches in areas above 3500 foot elevations
  • Travel is expected to be very difficult to impossible.  
 
California
Winter Storm Warning
Northern California is expecting heavy to moderate snowfall with blowing snow possible.  The mountains of NorCal are also expected to receive another round of snow.  The heaviest snow will occur over the foothills and mountains north of Redding.  
  • 6-12 inches in areas below 3500 foot elevations
  • 12-24 inches in areas above 3500 foot elevations
  • NorCal 3-10 inches with localized amounts up to 15 inches
  • Travel is expected to be difficult. Significant travel impacts will be possible in I-5 north of Redding.  Lighter snowfall accumulations will impact travel on I-80 and Highway 50 tonight into Tuesday.  
 
Nevada
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Nevada is under a winter weather advisory until 4amPST on Tuesday.  Gusty winds will continue to increase through Monday and will peak Monday afternoon at 55-75mph.  
  • 2-6 inches accumulation
  • Highway 395, Highway 31, Highway 97 and Highway 299 are expected to experience travel delays or travel could become impossible at times.  
 
Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory
The majority of Idaho is under a winter weather advisory from 11pm this evening to 11am MST Tuesday.  Snow is expected.  Wind gusts possible up to 40mph at times.
  • Trace to 3 inches in valleys
  • Up to 6 inches in mountains
  • Difficult driving conditions expected over night due to blowing snow creating low visibility and drifting.  
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory & Wind Chill Advisory
An artic cold front is settled over Montana creating wind chills as low as 20 to 40 degrees below zero.  For the winter weather advisory, snow is expected.
  • 1-3 inches of snow in lower elevations
  • 3-6 inches possible over Little Belt Mountains, Rogers and MacDonald Passes.
  • Slippery road conditions likely with reduced visibility. 
 
Wyoming
High Wind Watch
Western Wyoming is under a high wind warning.  Wind gust of 30-40 mph with gusts up to 65mph possible.  
  • Enhanced blow-over risk for lightweight & high-profile vehicles.
 
North Carolina
Winter Storm Warning & Winter Weather Advisory
Western North Carolina is under a winter storm warning.  The winter storm warning is in effect until noon today above 3500 feet while the winter storm watch is in effect until noon today below 3500 feet.  Heavy snow is expected.  Overnight rain turned over to brief freezing rain or sleet which is expected to rapidly change to snow.  Snow is expected to accumulate even on roads.
  • 3-5 inches winter storm warning area
  • 2-3 inches winter weather advisory area
  • Around 12 inches possible above 5000 feet near the Tennessee border
 
Virginia
Winter Storm Warning
Heavy snow is expected over much of Virginia through noon today.  Travel could be difficult and hazardous conditions are expected throughout the morning.  
  • 3-6 inches of accumulation
  • Up to 8 inches along higher ridges of the Blue Ridge
  • Winds gusting up to 40 mph
  • Most roads in VA will be impacted.
 
West Virginia
Winter Storm Warning
Southeastern WVA is under a winter storm warning.  Cities include areas south of Beckley on I-71.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • 4-8 inches of accumulation
  • Winds gusting up to 40 mph
  • I-71 could be impacted.
 
Maryland
Winter Storm Warning
The heaviest snowfall is expected to occur this morning.  Roads will be snow covered and slippery making travel difficult.  
  • 4-7 inches of accumulation
 
Delaware
Winter Storm Warning
Heavy snow is excepted until 4pm today.  
  • 6-12 inches of accumulation
  • Travel is expected to be difficult through much of today.
 
New Jersey
Winter Storm Warning
Heavy snow is excepted until 4pm today.  
  • 6-12 inches of accumulation
  • Hazardous road conditions are expected though most of the day.
 
Pennsylvania
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in effect for southeastern PA to include Philadelphia until 4pm today.  Snow is expected.
