Gordie Howe International Bridge to Open Fall of 2025
On track for a fall opening, the $5.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Detroit, Michigan, USA to Windsor, Ontario, Canada, is set to alleviate border bottlenecks and boost North American supply chain resilience. The new crossing will handle over 25% of all surface trade between the U.S. and Canada, providing a direct highway-to-highway connection that will streamline the flow of goods for industries on both sides of the border. With road lines now painted, the bridge is officially in its final stages of completion.

$1B Department of Energy Initiative to Strengthen Critical Mineral Supply
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is offering nearly $1 billion in funding to strengthen the domestic supply of critical minerals. The initiative addresses the nation's heavy reliance on foreign sources, particularly from adversarial nations, for materials vital to national security. With the U.S. having imported 100% of 12 critical minerals in 2023, the funding aims to expand domestic mining and processing, with the largest portion—a $500 million grant program—supporting battery material manufacturing and recycling.
"This investment in critical minerals is an impactful step toward building domestic resilience," said Mark Gordon, chief operating officer of Jarrett. "As it deploys over the next two to four years, new opportunities will be created to domestically source products, and supply chain leaders should be ready to adjust their strategies."

Tariffs Threaten Holiday Shopping with Higher Prices and Shortages
New tariff policies have turned the holiday shopping season into a high-stakes gamble. After businesses rushed to "front-load" shipments to beat deadlines—causing a record surge in cargo volumes—the supply chain now faces a "hole in the pipeline" with projected double-digit cargo dips. According to Goldman Sachs, this will force consumers to absorb up to 67% of the tariff burden by October, contributing to an overall 3.2% rise in consumer prices for the remainder of 2025. Ultimately, the availability and pricing of holiday items will be directly impacted by these decisions, with elevated prices and shortages potentially lingering into 2026.
“Holiday shipping is always a challenge, and in 2025, the shifting tariffs will make flexibility even more crucial within your supply chain. My suggestion is to review supplier risks, book freight early and plan for different scenarios to stay ahead,” said Aaron Nussbaum, Jarrett’s vice president of logistics operations.

The LTL Industry‘s Digital Shift: A New API Standard
A new technical standard aims to give shippers better visibility into LTL charges that may change in transit. The new API standards helps businesses see how costs might shift when carriers reweigh or reclassify a shipment, especially with recent changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC). This early look helps prevent surprise invoices that a shipper might not see until weeks later and brings the industry closer to a full set of digital standards for LTL shipping. This is particularly valuable as new technology, like dimensioning equipment, makes it more common for carriers to re-evaluate shipments on their docks.
“The new API standard is a win for shippers, 3PLs and carriers alike,” said Jacob Ackerman, senior director, contract, intelligence and analytics at Jarrett. “APIs bring much-needed clarity and real-time visibility that help all parties better manage costs and streamline operations. At the same time, auditing remains essential as technology can deliver the data, but having experts to review and validate it will continue to be critical for ensuring true billing transparency.”
Jarrett will host Ask the Expert, a lunch and learn-style discussion, with NMFTA experts Keith Peterson and Adam Mercer on Friday, Oct. 17. A conversational discussion on the status of the NMFC changes and their impact will allow an interactive opportunity to pose questions. Visit here for registration information.
