U.S. Blockade Reimposed on Iran

President Trump announced the reimposition of a U.S. blockade on Iranian shipping after Iran's leaders rejected demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, further escalating tensions in one of the world's most critical shipping corridors. The move follows renewed military strikes and continued conflict in the region, creating uncertainty for global trade and energy markets.

A wider return to the Suez Canal could shorten transit times between Asia and Europe, improve equipment availability and reduce transportation costs across global supply chains. While the situation remains fluid, industry experts are closely monitoring geopolitical developments that could influence international shipping patterns and capacity in the months ahead.

“Blockades like this create uncertainty that extends well beyond the affected region. Even if a company doesn't source directly from the Middle East, higher fuel costs, longer transit times and shifting carrier capacity can impact transportation budgets and inventory planning worldwide. Now is the time for shippers to review contingency plans and stay agile as conditions evolve,” said Mike Jarrett, President and CEO of Jarrett.

22Visibility and Technology Preparedness During Storms, Draughts and Beyond

As the transportation industry evolves, advanced weather intelligence is a crucial element of transportation management systems. Integrating hyperlocal forecasts enables logistics providers to make smarter, faster decisions that protect drivers, reduce delays and maintain service reliability.

“The stretch of unpredictable weather across the U.S. has underscored just how vulnerable transportation networks are to disruption,” said Jared Williams, Vice President of Logistics Operations at Jarrett. “As an industry, we're responding by investing in real-time visibility, adaptive tools and more agile carrier strategies to ensure we can pivot quickly and maintain service levels, even when the unexpected hits.”

FedEx Consolidation-1Riding the Waves: Managing Container Rate Volatility in Global Trade

More than five years after the pandemic disrupted global trade, container shipping rates remain highly volatile. According to Drewry, a leading global shipping research and consulting firm, spot rates on major East-West trade lanes still swing by an average of $1,400 per 40-foot container—driven by global conflicts, supply and demand shifts and rising fuel and insurance costs.

“During times of change, it's a great opportunity to evaluate your entire supply chain,” said Justin McInturff, International Logistics Manager at Jarrett. “This includes vendors, carriers of all modes and routing options. As tariffs evolve, many companies are reassessing supplier locations and market trends to stay competitive.”

Many shippers are locking in long-term carrier contracts and exploring strategies like freight futures and predictive forecasting.

LTL Freight Classification Standards Are Shifting

Beginning July 19, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association overhauled the National Motor Freight Classification system, replacing commodity-based groupings with a new density-based structure. The update adds two new density tiers, emphasizes weight, dimensions and freight handling and improves clarity for special handling and liability.

"With the NMFC changes rolling out, the most important thing you can do is be crystal clear on what you're actually shipping. Compliance isn't just about having the right forms; it's about having the right information,” said Jacob Ackerman, Vice President of Technology, Procurement and Analysis at Jarrett. “Take time now to review every product you move, update any outdated data fields, make sure your information is accurate and double-check that your pallet setup optimizes trailer space while maintaining safety of the product. It's important to do this right now, or you'll be scrambling to fix it later."
