Heavier LTL Shipments Signal a Tightening Market
LTL shipment weights are climbing, and the story runs deeper than a manufacturing rebound. The truckload freight recession has pushed rates higher, leading shippers to consolidate loads into heavier LTL shipments to manage costs. Combined with accelerating manufacturing activity and inventory restocking, the result is a structural shift that is tightening LTL networks and building rate pressure across the board.
Mike Jarrett, CEO and Founder of Jarrett, breaks down what shippers should be doing now to get ahead of the strain.
Summer 2026: What Logistics Operators Are Up Against
Logistics operators are navigating one of the most demanding environments in recent memory as fuel volatility, labor shortages, extreme heat and weather disruptions simultaneously. Since the strike on Iran in late February, diesel prices have surged nearly 50%, cutting directly into margins across the industry. In response, shipment data from January through April shows load density increased 19% as operators worked to maximize every mile traveled. Labor challenges are adding further strain, with summer demand amplifying existing staffing gaps while seasonal time-off requests and tough working conditions make retention just as critical as recruitment.
Extreme heat, severe weather and a persistent lack of real-time visibility are rounding out a difficult season. Facilities without proper climate controls face slower productivity and increased safety risk, while storms and flooding can create supply chain ripple effects with little warning. "The biggest risk this summer isn’t necessarily any single disruption,” said Mark Gordon, Jarrett Chief Operating Officer. “It’s a series of impacts ranging from fuel prices to global uncertainties to capacity shortages. Organizations that invest in better data, stronger communication and timely decision-making will be better positioned to manage risk, margins and maintain the highest level of service for their customers."

One in Three Containers is Traveling Empty
Ocean Carriers are moving more empty boxes than ever, and shippers are starting to feel it in their freight rates. According to new analysis from Danish maritime consultancy Sea-Intelligence, 30% of all container shipping work, measured in TEU-miles, now consists of repositioning empty containers. Before the pandemic, that figure was 24%. Since early 2019, empty container volumes have grown 65% while loaded shipments increased just 17%, with Sea-Intelligence noting those repositioning costs ultimately work their way into freight rates for shippers on the busiest trade lanes.
The cause? Trade imbalance. As cargo demand concentrates on specific lanes, containers pile up in regions where exporters do not need them, forcing carriers to reposition equipment at their own expense. "Empty repositioning has always been part of ocean freight, but at 30% it is a signal that global trade flows are structurally shifting," said Justin McInturff, Jarrett International Logistics Manager. "Shippers on the heaviest lanes will feel the rate impact first, and now is the time to be reviewing your contract mix and carrier relationships before that pressure arrives."
